Exciting ! Summer has come.

July and August sees summer in full swing at the Toya-Usu UNESCO Global Geopark. This season is short, so dash over the lake on a boat, dive in the sea, ride a canoe, explore the mountains, and see fireworks at night. Exciting, isn’t it?

Summer Activities So many things to do.

Canoeing and motorboat riding are the best water activities to do in summer. Or, take a boat to Nakajima Island. The path around the crater of Mt. Usu is also very impressive. You can even go swimming in the sea at the bay of Uchiura-wan.

Summer Festivals Fireworks and dance!

The Lake Toya Long Run Fireworks Display is the major event of summer, where gorgeous fireworks are launched over the lake every night. Other events include the festival with lots of food stands and fairs, makeshift shrines, and bon-dancing.

    Ride a canoe and paddle through the water! It is a great way to enjoy the charm of Lake Toya in the summer. A great way to make your day memorable.

    Refresh yourself at the hot springs!
  7. Lake Hill Farm
    The gelato shop adjacent to the farm offers tasty gelato and soft serve ice cream made from fresh milk. The view from this farm is great too.
  8. Toyako Onsen lakeside walking path
    It is great to walk along the lakeside path near Toyako Onsen in the gentle summer breeze. Try exploring around the Hot Springs Resort too.

    The sand beach faces the bay of Uchiura-wan. The swimming area here does not go very deep and the waves are calm, making for a safe and relaxing beach.
  5. Roadside Station Aputa
    After swimming in the sea, it is time to eat fresh seafood! Delicious dishes like sea urchin rice bowls and scallop rice bowls fill you with energy!
  6. Toya Marine Motor Boat
    After having fun at the bay, let’s head to Lake Toya.
    Race across the lake on a motor boat and feel the summer breeze on your face!

    Fireworks are now one of the major attractions of Lake Toya in summer. The sightseeing boats on the lake add beautiful lights to the night.

  4. Konpira Crater Ruins Walking Trail
    The Konpira crater ruins is one of the main features of the Geopark. The impact of the disaster still remains.
  5. Yukun Crater
    The walking trail situated in the mountain leads you to the edge of the crater, where you can get a view of the impressive emerald green pond.
  6. Toyako Visitor Center
    Volcano Science Museum
    After seeing the crater ruins, you may want to learn more about them.
  7. Wakasa-imo Honpo
    Deep-fried wakasa-imo, or “imo-ten” is a good post-hiking snack. Restore your energy with some freshly-fried imo-ten!
  8. Lake Toya Cruise
    The boat departs from the pier on the lakeside and sails towards Nakajima Island. Enjoy a picturesque view from the deck.
  9. Walk around on Nakajima Island
    Take a walk along the forest path. The trees stretch towards the sky, and birds and winds sing. A relaxing time among mother nature!
