The fall season sees the Toya-Usu UNESCO Global Geopark covered with autumn colors. Salmon swim upstream, and the time for harvesting fruit comes.

The season of autumn leaves, Mt. Usu, Showa-Shinzan, Nakajima Island, and all the waterfalls and parks along the Osaru River gradually transform to red, yellow, and orange. The autumn scene in the Geopark area is breathtakingly beautiful.

Seasons Specialties The grace of autumn.

Autumn is the season for harvest. There are various kinds of autumn specialties in the Geopark area. A typical Hokkaido pastime, people enjoy picking and eating seasonal fruits at farms, or observing salmon swim up the river.

  2. Start!
  3. New Chitose Airport
    JR Sapporo Station
  4. Sobetsu Kudamono Mura (Fruit Village)
    Here, you can hand-pick seasonal fruit such as grapes and apples. The taste of fresh fruit is stunning!
  5. Sobetsu Waterfall
    Walk along Sobetsu River and see the 18-meter tall Sobetsu waterfall. The negative ions in the air will make you feel deeply refreshed!
  6. Mount Usu Ropeway
    Take a ropeway from Showa-Shinzan Station and go up to the top of Mount Usu! Check out the great view of the mountain covered with rich autumn colors.
  7. White Oshiruko (sweet bean soup) at Okadaya
    Take a break at the café at the Toya Hot Springs Resort. White oshiruko, a popular soup made from Hokkaido milk and daifuku beans will warm you right up.
  8. Toyako Onsen
    Stroll alongside Lake Toya surrounded by red autumn foliage. Warm up your feet at the “Toron-no-Yu” foot bath while feeling the comfortable autumn wind.

  4. Indian Watermill Park
    Check out the salmon swimming up Nukkibetsu River during the autumn season.
  5. Café Suisha
    Take a break at the nearby café. They serve delicious salmon roe rice bowls only for a limited time. Made with fresh salmon roe from Toyoura, it is a must try!
  6. Lake Toya Cruise
    The Lake Toya Cruise allows you to appreciate the autumn colors of Lake Toya from the boat. The view of the towns as seen from the boat is also beautiful.
  7. Walking around Nakajima Island.
    Get off the boat at Nakajima Island and walk around. You can see some swans, woodpeckers, and if you are lucky enough, even some squirrels and Ezo deer.
  8. Nakatoya Onsen Kimundo-no-Ie
    After coming back, the next stop is a hot spring located on the east side of the lake. Warm your body in a 100% natural hot spring without any filtration or additives.

    A unique hill in Sangai-taki Park known for its eye-catching wooden sculptures.
  5. Sangai-taki Waterfall
    A beautiful waterfall rushes down in three layers. In autumn, the combination of white water and green leaves creates a stunning contrast.
  6. The “Niagara” of Otaki
    A magnificent waterfall spanning 100 meters wide. You will find it in the forest of Otaki Sports Park.
  7. Kita Yuzawa Onsen
    A hot springs resort surrounded by rich nature along Osaru River. There are large hotels, small inns, and lesser-known hidden spots here.
